Chase away the blues of boredom

Are you looking for ideas of fun activities to do with your children? Never again hear the neighing words, “I’m bored.” There are tons of fun things you can do to keep your kids busy while spending quality time with them.

Trampolines are always fun for children of all ages. You can jump with the kids and have a good time while burning off unwanted calories. Have a jumping contest to see who can jump the highest. Improve all those cherished games like Ring-Around-the-Roses by playing on the trampoline.

Water is another thing that most children enjoy. From wading through puddles to squirt toys, kids love them. Consider investing in an above ground pool that is large enough for you and your children. You will have a good time splashing around. Don’t forget the rubber duckies and sailboats. A trip to the lake or the sea is also always a winning idea.

For older children, summer camp is another activity to take away the blues of boredom. There are a variety of camps available to meet your child’s interests and price range. If you are concerned about leaving your child overnight, there are also many day camps available to keep your children busy during school breaks. Many colleges offer day camps to enrich your child’s academic skills. Fun activities like horseback riding, cheerleading, soccer, and other sports are available in abundance in most areas.

Have your own family outdoor challenge. Organize sack races, egg races, water activities and obstacle courses. Go for a nature walk and see who can discover the most interesting. Take a wagon for younger children, or take bikes and go for a ride.

Children also love to cook. It may be more difficult for you to clean it, but it will certainly be more fun to prepare. Let the children help prepare their own snacks or meals. For breakfast, use some food coloring and make your own green eggs and ham. Then cuddle up together and read the Dr. Seuss version. For lunch, use cookie cutters to make sandwiches in creative shapes or fill the celery stick with cheese or peanut butter. Pack up and go on a picnic, even if it’s right outside your own back door. Bake cookies or brownies and have a surprise waiting for Dad when he gets home from work. Consider wrapping up the treats and taking them to Grandma or an elderly neighbor and brighten their day.

Even on those rainy days you can chase away the sadness of boredom. Dress up and host a tea party or picnic indoors. Throw a blanket on the dining room table and pretend you’re camping. Take disposable cameras for the kids to take photos on all your outings and let them make their own scrapbooks on those days when it’s too messy to go outside. Cut heads out of some photos and use them to make paper dolls of your family. Let the children design and color the clothes.

Go fly a kite or teach your child to double dutch jump. Play jacks or marbles with your children. If you enjoyed it when you were younger, then they probably will too. Above all be open-minded and flexible. Let your child come up with his own ideas about what he would like to do. Your children will cherish the time you spend with them for a lifetime.
