What is a transition mat?

I recently received an email newsletter from a local carpet showroom, announcing a sale. The store offered a wide selection of transition rugs. Now, I have heard of many different styles of rugs, from southwestern patterns, oriental designs, plush toys, and even rugs made from recycled materials. I hear “transitional” and have no idea what that means in relation to floors. When you transition, you go from one thing to another. Are these rugs supposed to take me into the next room or the house next door?

So, I did some research and came away knowing a little more about rugs than before. It turns out that a transitional rug refers to the actual design of the rug. Its appearance and construction is reminiscent of a combination of two other styles:

Traditional – Traditional rug is typically defined by characteristics found in Persian and Oriental designs, particularly color, weave, and patterns. When you look at an oriental rug or rug, you might be surprised by the intricate craftsmanship and details of the flowers, laurels, and leaves.

Contemporary: Contemporary rug can remind you of a modern work of art. Bold colors and sharp lines, designs reminiscent of Warhol’s paintings or Picasso’s cubism. Rugs like these look great in rooms with contemporary and unique furnishings.

The transitional rug, therefore, takes the recognizable characteristics of both styles and combines them into something unique and beautiful. You will notice the care that has been taken in weaving such a rug and you will enjoy the colorful designs that complement your walls and décor. Carpet experts can tell you that this style reminds you of impressionistic designs – muted colors and flowing images. Although Impressionist-era painters worked with pastel shades, you are more likely to find that these rugs come in more earthy tones: rich browns and tan.

If you’re interested in purchasing a rug for your home, whether it’s for your living room or bedroom, a transitional design might work for your overall comfort. You’ll want to find a color and pattern that best suits your larger pieces, like your sofa or bedroom dressers, and covers a good portion of your floor to protect it from foot traffic.

Buying transitional rugs from a carpet and rug store is a great way to find the right style for your home. You may be tempted to try a home improvement store or department store for a good price, but you will often find that the staff are not as knowledgeable about how rugs are made and how to care for them. A rug is more than something you walk on, it’s part of you. Just like you would buy a car from a reputable dealer, the carpet you bring home needs to be sold by someone who knows where it comes from and what to do if it gets damaged.

Ask your local carpet dealer about a transitional rug and transform the beauty of your home interiors.
