What’s in tap water, anyway?

Anyway, what does tap water contain? You have probably seen all the household purifiers on the market and are wondering why they are necessary. If you don’t pay close attention to the news or read the latest studies, you are probably drinking a lot more than you bargained for.

In 2008, the Associated Press published an investigative report on traces of pharmaceuticals found in public drinking water supplies. It was an important step for them to publish these results.

Public water providers believed that the public did not need to know the results. Since the story was published, the Environmental Protection Agency has vowed to take action to address the problem. Politicians have also expressed concern.

However, it is unlikely that anything will be done. Most importantly, the public now knows a little more about exactly “what is in tap water.” Drugs!

“Weed killer by the glass”

That was the title of a story published by USA Today. Samples were collected every three days from people’s homes or offices in states such as Louisiana, Maryland and Iowa. Results showed high levels of atrazine and other herbicides, exceeding federal health standards, in almost all samples collected.

The highest levels were found in Danville, IL, Fort Wayne, IN, Bowling Green, OH, Columbus, OH, and Kansas City, KS. So if you live in any of these cities, the answer to “what’s in tap water” is a weed killer.

Thousands of different carcinogenic chemicals have been found in public water supplies across the country. Chlorine, used to disinfect and protect against waterborne diseases, is a known allergen, irritates the skin and eyes, irritates the respiratory tract, and can be toxic at high levels. In young children, consumption can cause anemia.

THMs are by-products of the chlorination process and are also known carcinogens. Lead seeps out of pipes and reaches supplies as the water passes through. VOCs cause a variety of health problems and are present in almost all of our surface and groundwater sources.

Cysts are parasites resistant to chemical disinfection. They are particularly dangerous for young children, the elderly, and those with poor immune systems.

What do we do?

Everyone must provide their own protection. We cannot wait for scientific debate and government regulations that may or may not provide better protection. Point-of-use home purifiers are affordable and effective.

For less than a hundred dollars, you can remove all of the contaminants mentioned here and probably a few that we forgot to mention. The system to look for is called selective multistage filtration. Keep in mind that cheap copycats like Brita, PUR, and Clean & Pure will not eliminate all the dangers mentioned here.

But don’t waste your money on reverse osmosis. It is an expensive and unnecessary step. It requires two-stage carbon filtration, an adsorption block with a sub-micron size porous structure and ion exchange. With those four steps, the answer to what is in tap water is not harmful at all. You can be sure that your health is protected.
