Drill Bits: A General Guide to Understanding the Basics

Whether you want to finish a fabrication job or some construction job with precision, you can’t get to the end result until you have the right drilling tool in hand. Varieties of drilling requirements need various types of drill bits. Going for the right hole type in the right place is not enough, the difficulty you face during the drilling process should be another main concern.

When you select a little, you have to think once what you are going to pierce. Soft materials can be easily cut through any type of drill bit, but hard materials need some specific types of drill bit to meet the end result. Some bits are known for their level of precision, while others are inexpensive and drill very fast.

Each bit is engineered through a specific material or has a specific type of coating to drill a perfect hole. Apart from these, the size of the bit and the angle of the tip are also important in helping people find the right type of cutting tool for their needs.

Let’s start with the materials: if you want to drill softwood, you can buy a bit made of low carbon steel. High carbon steel can provide good results on hardwood. However, both types of bits require frequent sharpening after only a few uses. High speed steel bits are considered perfect for drilling soft metals. These bits can withstand heat very well and perform well at high temperatures.

Cobalt bits on the other side can solve industrial purposes more efficiently with its high and fast heat resistance ability. Stainless steel, aluminum, and other hard metals can be easily drilled through these bits. However, you should take little care when drilling as this material is brittle along with the rigid nature that makes these bits easy to break if not operated carefully. Try to keep your speed in balance for accurate results without any damage.

The carbide tipped bit is the hardest to cut harder metals efficiently. These bits can last longer and drill through masonry and cured concrete very well.

When it comes to coating, black oxide is the basic type of coating on bits that helps increase the durability and life of any bit. When HSS bits are coated with black oxide, the HSS bits become corrosion resistant.

You can also find titanium coated bits that are more durable and stronger than plain bits. This coating helps the bits perform more accurately, rather than at high temperatures. This coating reduces the amount of friction that helps the bits drill more precise holes. Therefore, the types are various: masonry, pointed tip, auger, twist, shovel, forstner, hole saw, countersink, stepped, plug cutter and many more.
