First time on an all-inclusive cruise? Here are 7 things you need to know

When it comes to vacations we all try to have the time of our lives, things don’t always go as planned. As such, all-inclusive cruises have caught on because of their ability to do the seemingly impossible: everything. It really blows your mind to see how they handle such a diverse mass of people and cater to their needs at any hour of the day.

Still, if you’re going on your first all-inclusive cruise, there are a few things to think about before and during your trip:

1. Do your research! As with any successful vacation, the success of your trip comes from your willingness to investigate all aspects of your next adventure. Sure, it might seem like the planning takes away from the actual ‘adventure’ a bit, but since this is your first cruise, you want to make sure you’re not left in the dark on any details. Travel experts say that 75-80% of cruise success comes from taking the time to research and plan your trip.

2. Choose the right ship: The good thing about cruises is that you have several options depending on your price and the list of services requested. This is where some of the research you do pays off. Always make sure you check in with the actual ships rather than the cruise line, as what’s on offer can vary greatly.

3. Set a working budget and stick to it – When planning your first cruise trip, you want to make sure you create a budget. Nothing makes a vacation fall apart faster than money problems, especially if you know you paid too much for something. One thing to consider is how much it will cost to travel to the port of shipment. Does it make more sense to fly or drive? Also keep in mind any special interests you may wish to pursue while on your ship. Cruise lines also offer themed cruises, so it’s worth checking out.

4. Pick the right time to go – This is a bit more difficult to keep in mind, since many of us have designated times when we can go on vacation. Still, if you want to get a great deal on a cruise, book off-peak, as a lack of general travel traffic makes cruise lines more willing to lower prices.

5. Plan your luggage: Yes, you’re excited about your first all-inclusive cruise, but try to avoid large amounts of luggage. Also, take the time to unpack. Living out of a suitcase is not the way to operate on vacation. Plus, whether you’re going for a run to the pool, to the buffet table, or dressing for a formal event on board, it’s easier to prepare if you have things readily available and visible.

6. Don’t Forget to Explore the Ship: These are the simplest items for first-time cruisers to consider. While you’ve done your research and your attention is being drawn in all directions, take the time to look around you. Familiarize yourself with the layout of the ship and take it as an opportunity to talk to others.

7. Find Somewhere ‘Special’: Even when you’re on an all-inclusive cruise, being able to call a place your “go to” hangout can be an easy way to wind down after a busy day. Remember: you are on vacation, so relax!
