It’s that time of year again. It’s time to organize and take control of our homes through a little thing called “spring cleaning.” Words alone can cause anxiety because they trigger thoughts of dust and garbage. Spring cleaners tend to have a big problem with windows. Whether you’ve found an old set in your basement or are looking to replace your current ones, windows can be repurposed in creative and beautiful ways. Here’s a list of the slickest and smartest ways to reuse old windows:
1. Old Window Picture Frame
Old photographs and old windows seem to be two things people just don’t know what to do with. Why not combine the two to make a stunning picture frame? The more panels the better as it means you can fit more photos! These photo frames are great as they add a vintage touch to any home, while also giving you a place to display your memories. All you need is an old window frame, glue or tape, and decorative paper.
as: This project is so simple! All you have to do is carefully flip the frame over so that it is upside down. Paste your photos to the back of the panels and secure with glue or tape. If your window has a few large panels, instead of a bunch of smaller panels, you can use the wallpaper to fill the space around the photos. This will provide a nice, colorful backdrop. Secure your frame with weight-appropriate wall hangings and light up your home with memories!
2. Old Window Jewelry Display Shelf
Where is your favorite necklace or watch at this very moment? In a drawer? In a box? Using an old window, you can create a jewelry display shelf that provides space to hang your favorite pieces. The display shelf allows you to turn your jewelry into a decorative item and can add color and beauty to your bedroom or bathroom.
as: Using hot glue or staple gun, secure the fabric of your choice to the back of each old window panel. Second, choose the hooks you want to use for your jewelry – the style and size is entirely up to you! Secure the hooks in place at the front of your window using screws. The pieces of fabric that we attached are a perfect place to secure your earrings. Simply pierce the fabric with the earring posts and you will never lose an earring again!
3. Old window coat rack
Similar to turning a window into a jewelry rack, heavier windows can also be used to hold jackets and hats. An old window coat rack is ideal for any home because it makes for an eye-catching entryway, making an amazing first impression in your home. Any type of window can be turned into a coat rack, but I say, the more panels the better, as it will allow you to add your own flair by adding photos, fabric, glass, or any decorative piece.
as: You may want to start by painting your window first; this will add additional style and color to the room. However, if you choose to paint the window, be sure to sand down any cracked edges and chips. Line C or S hooks along the bottom of the window and secure with screws. If you’re feeling really adventurous, using vintage knobs instead of screws will give the shelf an even more vintage feel. When you’re ready to hand over the shelf, be sure to use hardware that can support the weight. And voila, now you are ready to hang up your hat and relax!
4. Old window and fabric headboard
If you really want to think outside the box, using an old window as a headboard is an extremely creative and beautiful way to repurpose your windows. The windows provide cottage fare and take up the right amount of space to produce a sense of comfort. To do this, all you need is one or two old windows or window frames depending on the size of your bed, fabric of your choice, fabric scissors, a staple gun or hot glue gun, and pliers.
as: If your old windows still contain glass, remove them very carefully. Do your best to get them out, and while wearing gloves, remove any remaining shards of glass, metal, or nails with your pliers. You can also choose to sand the window frames. Second, attach a fabric of your choice, patterned side down to the back of the window frame. You’ll want to make sure you pull the fabric as tight as possible, to prevent wrinkles and sagging. The fixing of the fabric is done with the stapler or with the glue gun. If you want to add more of a touch, you may want to alternate fabrics between panels, depending on how many panels your window frame has. Now flip the frame over, hang it over your bed, and you’ve got a whole new room!
5. Old window slate
If you need to spruce up a child’s room, or just need a new way to stay organized, the old window chalkboard is perfect! It’s so easy, not to mention creative and versatile!
as: Thoroughly clean the window glass to remove any dirt that may cause unevenness. Using chalkboard spray paint, coat all glass surfaces. Wait for the paint to dry and you’ll have a brand new whiteboard! For something extra, you can choose to paint the window frame, or you can apply decorative clings to the window and remove them when the paint has dried to create fun shapes.
6. Old Window Pot Rack
For me, a beautiful kitchen is defined by a hanging island, which contains pots and pans. I love having my cookware out in the open, ready to put to work. The Old Window Pot Rack combines ease of organization with the beauty of a vintage conversation piece. Since pots and pans can be a bit heavy, you’ll want to make sure your old window frame is strong enough to support the weight of the dishes. If the wood is too thin, dry, or rotten, you may have a problem down the road when the frame gets damaged and you have to clean up the mess.
as: Once you have found a strong and sturdy window frame, you can choose to varnish or paint it. Once the paint dries, attach hooks to the front of the frame that are large enough to hold the dishes you wish to hang. Remember to add the hooks on the prettier side of the window, as this will be visible. On the reverse, attach strong hooks and chains to each of the four corners; this will be the ceiling mount for your rack. Attach the chains to the ceiling, making sure everything is well anchored. You’re done! Now hang up your pots and pans and cook yourself a celebratory dinner!
7. Old window table
If you have an old window with the glass intact, you may have unknowingly saved yourself some money on a new coffee table. An old window can be used to create a unique, vintage-looking coffee table, making an amazing centerpiece for any living room. All you will need is some paint or varnish, masking tape, a small brush or roller, screws, a drill, and putty.
as: Before you start painting the frame, sand it down to remove any cracks or chips. Next you will need to line the glass with painter’s tape as we want the windows to remain clean for display. After the paint has dried, you’ll want to remove the top of the coffee table you want to fix. Lay your frame on the bottom of the table, sanded and painted side up, and carefully drill the frame into place. For a more authentic, rustic look, leave the screw heads exposed. If not, you may want to drill a bit more and fill in the gaps with putty. Once everything has dried, sand it down and paint it with the color of your choice. Now invite your friends and put your new table to work!
