Is my cell phone slowly damaging my brain?

The first time I wondered if cell phones affect brain cells was when I placed my cell phone near my computer monitor. The computer system I use has the old model CRT monitor. I had just placed the phone near the monitor and after a while I saw a lot of disturbances on the screen. Thinking I had received a text or a call, I checked my cell phone; there was nothing. That’s when I wondered if the phone was emitting some kind of electronic wave all the time, even when it wasn’t being used. I usually keep my mobile phone close to my head when I fall asleep. So are those waves or impulses, whatever the phone is emitting, affecting my brain?

Concerned, I decided to do some research. I found that a lot of research has been done in the recent past, especially after cell phones became so popular. One study showed that cell phone radiation greatly increased the activity of brain cells. There are other research studies that show that the electromagnetic radiation emitted by phones could even be carcinogenic.

Back in 2011, the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) grouped cell phone radiation into Group 2B. According to their jargon, this classification means that the radiation could possibly be carcinogenic. Only more research will show the whole truth.

A group of researchers conducted a study with 47 healthy adults. Some of them were asked to hold the phone close to their ear, while others were asked to do the same, but with the phone turned off. The researchers found considerable brain activity in those who held phones that were turned on.

Whether these waves cause any significant damage to brain cells has yet to be scientifically documented. But if you look at the way the few studies are going, it could mean that the ubiquitous cell phone could soon become the bane of our lives. Another scary thing to think about is how these radiations might affect children’s brains. Not only are their skulls thinner than those of adults, but their brains are not yet fully developed. So could this mean cell phone radiation is even more dangerous for them?

The cell phone has become an integral part of life, and there is no way we can completely eliminate it from our lives. The only thing I can think of is not talking on the phone for a long time. If I have to, I prefer to use headphones. And these days I don’t keep my cell phone near my head when I sleep. Stay away from harmful radiation…
