It seems that everywhere you look these days there is a chihuahua. They are in movies, on television, on billboards, they are even pets to eat. But people say they are talkative, aggressive and can even be mean. Well, there has to be something about these little ones that makes them so popular. So what is the true story of these little puppies?

Chihuahuas are known to be so popular due to their small size. The smaller the better in the world of Chihuahuas and the smallest there is is what is known as a Chihuahua teacup. These little guys make traveling with a pet as easy as possible. They can make a comfortable home in your bag or easily fit anywhere. And don’t worry, they don’t mind being in a small place. Chihuahuas are actually diggers. By nature, they like to be in small covered shelters. You will mostly find them sleeping under blankets, furniture, or anywhere they can find. As cute and cozy as it sounds, this also has its drawbacks. They are constantly digging! They will furiously dig in a place for what seems like hours. This can ruin furniture, bedding, and flooring. However, this burrow also makes for huge hugs. They like to sleep on the crook of their arm or leg or under their chin. If you want a snuggle partner, you have one in a Chihuahua.

Another drawback that you may have heard of owning a Chihuahua is that they are very protective of their owner. This can make them great loyal animals, but if anyone gets close to that mommy … watch out, here come the teeth! However, this can be avoided with proper training. It is best to adopt a Chihuahua at a very young age and do what is known as “socializing” him. Take them out wherever you go and when people swoon over how cute they are (and trust me, it’s a lot) pass them around and let the stranger hold them. This teaches your puppy that he is okay and will dramatically reduce the chance of this bad behavior forming before it starts.

In general, there are definite advantages and disadvantages to owning a Chihuahua. If you take the time to properly train and socialize them, they will make wonderful pets. Dress them up in cute outfits, take them anywhere, and you’ll have a best friend for life. So if you are ready to snuggle a lot, then you and your pup will be a perfect match.
