The cheapest places to retire in the United States

When you start looking for a cheap place to retire in the US, there are several factors to consider.

Whether or not that particular state has an income tax will help identify a cheap spot for some.

Whether or not you can live off-grid would be important to another retiree. If you can handle living in isolation with propane, wind, and solar power providing your utilities, you have many places to choose from… check your local zoning laws as a first step.

If you like constant change in your living spaces…consider living full time in an RV. This is a great way to experience and see all of the beautiful United States. Haven’t you seen all the National Parks? Do it in an RV…it’s an inexpensive way to live…and you no longer need a snowplow or lawn mower. If you don’t like your neighborhood, start the engine and leave.

Park model mobile homes, also known as manufactured homes, are a great way to retire on the cheap. Arizona’s park-style mobile home communities, for example, are like cruise ships that don’t move…continuous activities, at a low price are available. If you have some land, you can put a manufactured home anywhere you can get propane, septic tank service, and a water source (drill a well).

These cheaper places to retire also have nothing to do with sacrifice, these lifestyles offer a fun way to live…it’s up to you if you need to have a lot of friends around or if you do quite well with more isolation.

To get started, make a checklist, two checklists if you’re married, then compare the lists. You may be surprised or shocked by these two lists. If you’re a match, that’s fine, if not, compromise now before you start going one way and he or she goes the other.

We have been retired since 1994 using frugal ways to retire, you can too.
