The who, what, when, where and why of watching professional (American) football

With professional football season, or NFL (National Football League) as we officially know it upon us, I have my remote control in one hand, beer in the other, and I’m ready to rock and roll.

Who watches professional football?

That is easy. Almost everyone. However, at least almost all. Men, women, children. Young, old. Teachers, doctors, lawyers, the family priest. People of all races and religions watch soccer. People of all sizes and shapes. Even the family pet has been known to watch a game or two. Each and every Sunday during football season, stadiums across the country are packed to capacity with thousands of people. Every Sunday millions of viewers tune in to the games.

What is professional soccer?

For those of you unfamiliar with the game, professional soccer isn’t just a bunch of
grown men running up and down a field beating each other up. Professional soccer is a game played by athletes who possess an unusual combination of strength and speed. In what other sport do you see men weighing over 300 lbs. that runs like the wind? Professional soccer is a game played with 11 players per side moving at tremendous speed, all working in sync with each other, unlike any other sport.

When do people watch professional football?

The NFL season actually begins in early August with preseason games. These are games that teams play to prepare for the regular season that begins in early September. During the regular season, games are played every week, with most games being played on Sunday afternoons. A game is also played on Sunday night, as well as Monday night. Also, later in the season, there are a few games on Thursday nights and one game on Saturdays. Let’s not forget about Thanksgiving, where you can now catch not one, not two, but three games! The regular season culminates with playoff games beginning in January and played on Saturdays and Sundays and finally culminating in Super Bowl Sunday.

Where do people watch professional football?

Everywhere there is a TV. At home, at a friend’s house, in a restaurant, in a bar, in the gym, etc. Even your local Sears. Believe me I know. And I guarantee that where there is a television, there will be a crowd.

If you are very lucky, you will be able to go to the stadium and watch the game in person. Depending on where you live, if you’re in a cold-weather city, bundle up! But, it’s all worth it. Why else would you see 60,000 fans doing it?

Why watch professional football?

Just because it’s the best game ever! Think about it: why else would millions of fans tune their dials to the game every Sunday? And why would thousands upon thousands fill stadiums in the US? There must be something in this game, right?

I am convinced that there are two types of people. Those who are already fans and those who want to be fans, but aren’t yet because they don’t understand football. And the reason they don’t get it is because they haven’t had anyone (or anything) really explain football to them. Granted, it has a “lingo” of its own, but I guarantee once you get the hang of it, you won’t look back.
