Three Good Places to Skimboard in Maui, Hawaii

Hawaii is simply a paradise, it also has some of the best skimboarding spots in the world. One of the best places is on Maui, Big Makena. The coasts are characterized by their steep slopes and for being very wide. The waves can grow up to 12 feet, which is ideal for skimboarding. Big Makena is also not usually very crowded, as all skimboarders wish. There are some big rocks there so watch out for those, other than that it’s the ideal spot. Big Beach Makena is very easy to get to. When in Maui, just ask some locals or pick up a tourist map anywhere.

Another great place is called Kaanapali. This beach is very famous for what is called a sidewash and most of the time it is not very crowded. This place is popular with the locals, who are generally very friendly to everyone. Kaanapali has some nice, powerful breaks that make it great for pulling off a good variety of tricks.

Kaanapali is located directly across from the Kaanapali Alii Hotel, Westin Hotel and continues to the Hyatt.

When you get the chance, head to Maui and hit the beaches with your skimboard.

Lahaina

Lahaina has nice beach breaks most of the time. The first BIG swells of winter and summer are the best. Tubes, tubes, tubes!! Incoming tides are the way to go. However, the crowds here aren’t that great and some locals have been known to cause trouble, so make sure you’re careful not to hit anyone when you’re skimboarding.

From Lahaina (west side), Maui. Go north to Kaanapali on the Honoapiialani HWY (only one road). Turn left on Kaanapali and look for Condo Kaanapali Ali’i. Go to a beach access at the Ali’i or at the Marriot.
