Tips for identifying additional storage space in your home

Over the years we have collected an incredible amount of clutter. Some things we keep for sentimental reasons, others we keep just in case, and sometimes it’s just a matter of family growth. But how can we contain it all, especially now that minimalism is the new trend? New homes never seem to offer enough storage space, while older properties offer cumbersome and hard-to-use space.

So what can be done?

Start by looking around your home to consider how much storage space you really need. Identify your problem areas and be honest; Would a cleanup help free up storage space or is it definitely a matter of having to accommodate more? If it’s about accommodating more, consider upgrading single-function furniture with multifunctional ones to provide quick fixes. If upgrading the furniture isn’t an option, simply decide which items need to be hidden to create more space. Identify any “dead” spaces around your home: obvious places like walls and corners and not-so-obvious places like half-full closets, single-rail closets, space under beds, etc. Then search the internet or go to your local DIY store for some inspiration and possible solutions.

hallways

The corridors are known as dumps. No matter how small your space is, you need to find a way to accommodate visitors’ coats and shoes. Coat rack and coat rack designs can range from freestanding multi-functionals to slim ones that attach to the wall; choose the ones that work with your space, as they need to help the situation, not add to it. If you don’t have carpet on the stairs, consider converting the bottom steps to pull-out drawers, and if you have available space under the stairs, consider converting it. Pull-out storage works great if your hallway is wide enough, if not; add shelves or use it to store household items like the vacuum cleaner and ironing board.

Kitchen room

Think about how you can use the space more effectively. Do you really need all those gadgets in sight? Consider a pull-out TV or pull-out or drop-down table that will help maximize minimal space. Stackable storage systems are available for the internal areas of closets that really help to maximize them to the fullest. Add more storage space by simply adding wire baskets to the inside of the doors. Keep utensil and cutlery drawers in order by investing in drawer dividers, and organize the space under the sink by gathering all your cleaning supplies. If you’re really into recycling, keep on top of it by having designated areas for each of the materials you recycle. Add shelves or wire baskets to store your fresh fruits and vegetables, and if your kitchen can accommodate a kitchen cart, opt for one that offers a butcher block and some storage facilities.

bathroom

Consider installing a bathroom panel that slides down, as these are great for storing bathroom items like shower gel, soaps, shampoos, etc. Buy a hammock with suction cups or invest in some rope bags with hooks; these are great for storing children’s toys or individual pieces. If space allows, opt for a cabinet with a mirror; These come in various shapes and sizes and provide great storage areas. Add over-the-door coat hooks to hold spare towels, laundry bags, or individual wash bags.

Bedrooms

If you don’t have floor-to-ceiling closets, consider investing in some. Alternatively, think about internal adjustments. Most closets can accommodate two hanging rails. Install a pull-out trouser rail and you may even find you have enough space to install a few shoe racks underneath. Buy some hanging pockets that hook to the top of a door to store shoes, scarves and belts and if you don’t have a bed with drawers, make the most of the space below by investing in durable storage boxes or vacuum bags for storage. seasonal ideas

Living room

Like the main room in the house, this can get a bit messy if items don’t have a defined space. Children’s toys can be stored in blanket boxes, wicker boxes and storage beanbags or hidden behind multifunctional screens. There are large multi-storage units available that will hold all the game consoles, gaming equipment, audio equipment, CDs and DVDs you have.

Whatever storage concerns you have, don’t be afraid to think outside the box, you may think space is an issue, but there are many different storage ideas available and with a little imagination you’ll be amazed at what you can achieve.
