Clothing Cost: What Are The Costs Involved In Outsourcing Clothing Production?

This article is about the price of wholesale clothing.

How to decide how many different fabrics, colors and logos I can handle within my budget. Above a certain limit, the total cost will no longer make sense. What is the cost of making the clothes? How to calculate the cost of an order?

Think first in terms of fabrics.

Each fabric must be ordered in bulk in 180 kg bags. Let’s say your clothing line uses two different fabrics: polo fabric and classic t-shirt fabric. The manufacturer will have to order two cotton bags (one of each fabric).

The cost of a cotton bag is around USD 700 for ready-to-dye fabric.

Second: Price of dyeing the fabric.

It will take another usd 200 per bath to dye the fabric. A bath can accept up to 80 kg. (When the weight exceeds 80 kg, another larger bathroom is used.)

Note that the limit is 80kg for dyeing (not 180kg), so it costs about $500 to dye a full cotton bag in one color. If you were to dye the cotton in ten different colors, then the cost to dye would be 10 x $200 = $2,000.

Finally, Third: Cost of manufacturing clothes.

The cost of making your clothes is related to the time people spend on the site. It is made up of fixed costs and variable costs.

Fixed costs of garment manufacturing: A rate representative of work performed by tradesmen, designers, cutters, and direct customer service relationships. Amounts involved: from USD 150 for a simple t-shirt (in any amount).

This cost can reach up to 500 usd for a garment that involves additional work (very specific fabric, buttons or zippers made to measure, etc.). Please note that this fee is No related to the quantity of clothes ordered.

Mixed costs: (not really fixed, not really variable):

Prints and embroidery: usd 50 for the first one, then around usd 1 per print. Labels: Custom woven labels (neck tag), custom dust bags and hang cards are around USD75 each for any quantity less than 500 pieces.

All quantities presented in this category are for designs involving two colors in standard sizes. These amounts can easily be doubled with a larger logo and more colors involved.

Variable garment manufacturing costs: Production of people.

People: Cost of time spent on work by sewer staff, helpers, and quality control to complete the order. This can be around 1 or 2 usd depending on the number of standard shirts. For jeans this will be around usd 4.

More details:

Order a cotton bag:

180kg of fabric will be cut into 500 t-shirts. It involves using 220gsm fabric (heavyweight fabric) with a medium sized t-shirt that is 85cm tall (bottom to neck).

Tint in three colors:

With the same data, an 80 kg bath supposes about 220 t-shirts. Cost for dyeing 180 kg of fabric in three baths: USD 600.
