"Robby" Starring Warren Raum and Ryp Siani

“Robby” is a 1968 Robinson Crusoe-style low-budget film. It stars two relatively unknown actors: Warren Raum and Ryp Siani. Raum plays “Robby”, a 10-year-old boy who has been stranded on an island. While wandering the island in search of food and shelter, and hopefully his parents, he comes across a naked native boy whom he calls “Friday”.

Although it is never revealed how long Robby stays on the island before being rescued, it must be assumed that it is several months before Friday is able to learn English during the time she spends with him. While Robby teaches him English, how to play “cowboys and Indians” and the importance of wearing clothes, Friday teaches his new friend how to gather food, how to fish and how to swim.

Since the two boys have grown up in completely different cultures (Robby in America and Friday on an island), we see that they have two completely different attitudes towards clothing. Friday wanders the island stark naked; completely uninhibited. Robby, at nine, is too old to “run without pants,” and he can’t understand why Friday’s mom would let him walk around naked.

When the two boys are rescued by a lone sailor (why the man sailed to this particular island is never clearly explained), Friday speaks English fairly well, and Robby has lost all his inhibitions. The two boys are the best of friends and have learned many valuable lessons from each other.

Although the acting and story are not that great in this movie, it is a watchable movie. A good look at how children can quickly adapt to new situations and quickly make new friends.
