Tips for traveling by train in Morocco

When traveling by train, first learn some guidelines about booking tickets, class of travel, travel time, ticket costs, and how to get to the station.

On your visit to Morocco, getting on a train is one of the most comfortable ways to travel around the country. It’s affordable and can get you to key cities in no time. If you want to travel by train, be sure to read some important guidelines.

ticket booking

Upon arrival in Morocco, you can make ticket reservations or buy tickets anywhere in the country at any time. The train system in Morocco is huge, so getting a ride is usually not a dilemma. However, traveling to Marrakech from Tangier is different. If the berths are fully occupied, you can make use of second class, although some hotel owners may take the liberty of pre-booking it for a trip.

travel class

There are two ways to travel by train in Morocco, a first class and a second class. Six people fit in a first-class compartment, while eight people can fit in a second-class carriage. First class reservations allow you to have an actual reservation, which is great if you want to have a seat near the window to enjoy the view. If not, it is on a first-come, first-served basis. Refreshment carts are often available, offering drinks and snacks to passengers at varying prices.

Travel time

Train schedules can be found on the official ONCF site, which is in French. From Marrakech, you can reach Casablanca in 3 hours, Rabat in 4 hours and Fez in 7 hours. From Tangier you can reach Marrakech in 11 hours via a direct overnight journey, and Fez in 5 hours, and vice versa.

ticket costs

Train tickets in Morocco are affordable. You will pay your ticket at the station in cash. Children under 4 years of age travel free, while children from 4 to 12 years of age have lower fares. Fares are different depending on the class of travel, with first class being more expensive than second class.

get to the station

Upon arrival at Casablanca International Airport, you can take a train that goes to the central station within the city. From there you can travel to your desired destination like Fes, Marrakech, Tangier and other Moroccan cities. In cities other than Casablanca, you can call a taxi to take you to the nearest train station. Always try to have a hotel address ready before you leave. Other cities also offer a bus route.

When you are at the train station, always check the timetable to avoid missing a trip. Also, keep an eye on your belongings. When you bring your own food to the train, kindly offer some to the other passengers, unless it is Ramadan.
