Mind your manners – Top 10 hostel etiquette tips

Make your next hostel stay more enjoyable for yourself and everyone else by following the tips below.

1. Keep quiet, especially at night when others are trying to sleep.

It’s not appropriate to be packing, crumpling plastic bags, or blasting music on your MP3 player late at night. Reserve your luggage for daylight hours and use headphones to listen to music; equally to open and close a noisy locker.

2. At night, turn off your cell phone or put it on vibrate.

This advice is good to follow whenever you are in a public place where a cell phone ringtone could be harmful to others.

3. Clean up after yourself.

Wash your own dishes and dispose of garbage in appropriate receptacles. Nothing will irritate hostel staff or fellow travelers more than having to collect your things.

4. Do not kiss in the bedrooms.

A room with other guests is no place to be intimate! Yes absolutely have to do the horizontal tango, get a (hotel) room!

5. Leave the lights off after dark.

If you arrive (or return) late to your room, leave the lights off and shine a small flashlight to find your bed. If you have to read to sleep, use a small book lamp to illuminate the pages.

6. Respect the belongings of other guests.

Never borrow something without permission. Of course, you would never steal, would you?

7. Remember that a hostel is not a nudist colony.

Don’t wander around your dorm room without clothes. Although attitudes in some countries are more liberal than others, always act and dress as if your grandmother is in the room. Don’t sleep naked either.

8. Download and wait.

Emptying the intestines is a necessary human function. However, no one else wants to see the corn you ate last night sitting in the toilet bowl and stinking up the lodge as it sits and rots. Flush the toilet and wait to make sure it’s working properly. If necessary, rinse again.

9. Don’t touch food in the refrigerator unless it belongs to you.

A quick way to make enemies in a lodge is to start eating food that belongs to other guests. Just eat what belongs to you. Violating this rule is especially egregious if you consume something clearly labeled with someone else’s name!

10. Treat everyone as you would like to be treated.

This is the golden rule of hostelling. Whenever you are faced with a new situation, put yourself in the shoes of everyone around you, acting as you would like. to them Act. Follow this rule at all times and you will be the ideal hostel guest. In fact, you may not even need the above list.
