NOKIA N70 3G PHONE

Description

The Nokia N70 is the successor to the popular 6680. Like its predecessor, it is designed for WCMDA/GSM 900/1800/1900 networks. The N70 comes with a 64MB MMC card in the sales package that can transfer files. It also has Bluetooth connectivity. The N70 is also based on the Symbian operating system, making the phone an open platform for the widest variety of applications written in Java or Symbian. The phone supports the following formats JPEG, MP3, PPT, DOC, XLS and PDF. The main improvement over the 6680 is its 2 megapixel camera which can be used for video sharing and recording or using the camera with the smooth 20x digital zoom, built in LED flash and high quality lens provided is also supported with the Nokia XpressPrint printing solution that makes producing large printouts of images. You can even connect a keyboard to your phone via Bluetooth. Measuring just 108.8 x 53 x 17.5mm, the Nokia N70 is the smallest 2-megapixel 3G smartphone ever, based on the leading Series 60 platform. It’s also lighter than the 6680.

Characteristics

From a technical perspective, it is a GSM 900/1800/1900 phone. The N70 also comes with built-in Bluetooth and Pictbridge printing support for easy photo printing. On the software side, the N70 supports visual radio apps, comes with RealPlayer installed, as well as a small suite of business-grade apps. Of all the N-series phones, this is the one most likely to convince your boss to buy you for the office, if only because the entertainment apps are better disguised than the purely musical or photographic aspirations of the other mobile N. series Connectivity is once again provided by Nokia’s PC Suite software. Like the N90, the N70 features a 2.0 megapixel camera with a surprising amount of clarity for a mobile phone camera. The N70 offers up to 22 MB of internal memory for storage. With the amount of downloadable 3G data out there, not to mention the phone’s built-in photo and music offerings, it’s likely to be used up pretty quickly. For additional storage, the N70 uses RS-MMC (Reduced Size Multimedia Card). The slot for these is on the right side of the phone, and our test sample came with a 128MB RS-MMC card.

Conclusion

Nokia’s N70 isn’t that bad. Unlike so many 3G phones, including the N80, it’s neither thick nor gangly. It has the sleek look of Nokia business phones along with a consumer-friendly feature set. The camera is good, and there’s a good music player for your MP3s: it also supports the iTunes-compatible AAC format, though not songs downloaded from Apple’s online music store. Sure, it has its idiosyncrasies (size, lack of flight mode) and battery life could be (much) better, but the N70 won me over nonetheless. A great SUV.
