Use body language to make an impression

Nonverbal communication is a great tool to help you stand out from the crowd. Too often, people don’t realize that body language makes up 55% of the initial impression that is generated. This is certainly essential during the interview process. Smile and use gestures when speaking to appear enthusiastic and personable. By listening, not in a thoughtful way to show that you are engaged. If the interview is taking place over the phone, be equally aware of providing comments such as “Uh-huh” and “I understand” when the other person is speaking. Being able to answer unexpected questions in a safe matter will go a long way toward getting you the job. Be sure to minimize “unsafe” words like “um, uh, like and you know” which can indicate that you don’t feel very safe. Research has shown that using too many of these filler words will make you sound insecure and lacking in confidence.

Punctuality is still important

Making your interviewer wait is the easiest way to make a bad impression. Try to be sitting in front of your computer at least ten minutes before your interview is scheduled so you have time to check your technology and collect yourself. Please “arrive” to the interview (ie, click on the link) about a minute or two before the scheduled start time. Also make sure to download the app if you have never used it before. Do this ahead of time.

Pausing is more important than ever

When answering interview questions, insert short, strategic pauses into your speech. Pausing can help you slow down and keep your message clear and easy to understand. This is especially important in remote communication, as delays and audio overlap can make it difficult to understand speech. Pausing also helps project an image of confidence and professionalism, and gives your interviewer time to digest your message as you speak.
